What Is Belt Length?

Belt length is the total circumference of a belt wrapped around two pulleys. It is a fundamental parameter needed to select the correct belt size for replacement or new equipment design.

Belt length is geometrically determined from three values: the drive pulley diameter, driven pulley diameter, and center distance. When the pulleys differ in size, the belt consists of straight and arc sections, and the wrap angle (contact angle) is also derived.

The wrap angle directly affects belt transmission capacity. A smaller wrap angle increases the risk of slippage and reduces efficiency, so it is important to verify both belt length and wrap angle during the design phase.

The exact open belt length L is calculated as L = 2C·cosα + π(D₁+D₂)/2 + α(D₁−D₂), where α = arcsin((D₁−D₂)/(2C)).

The small pulley wrap angle θ₂ = π − 2α, and the large pulley wrap angle θ₁ = π + 2α. A smaller wrap angle means less belt surface available for friction-based power transmission.

Belt Replacement & Standard Selection
When replacing belts on existing equipment, calculate the required length from pulley diameters and center distance, then select the closest standard belt part number. Especially useful when direct measurement is difficult. V-belts are standardized by inside circumference under designations such as JIS K 6323 (types A, B, C, etc.); match the calculated length against the standard table to determine the part number.
New Belt Drive System Design
Once the motor and driven machine layout is determined, select pulley diameters and calculate belt length. Verify that wrap angles are sufficient and adjust center distance or pulley sizes as needed. If the small pulley's wrap angle falls below 120°, slippage becomes likely; increase the center distance or reduce the pulley diameter difference to compensate.
Tensioner Adjustment Estimation
The difference between the standard belt length and the theoretical length helps estimate the required tensioner adjustment stroke. Also useful for designing in allowance for belt stretch over time. V-belts typically undergo an initial stretch of about 0.5–1% of total length after first use, so the tensioner travel range should include enough margin to accommodate this.

What is the difference between an open belt and a crossed belt?
